About Us

At Blue Cabin Naturals Products (BCNP), the word ‘Natural’ isn’t taken lightly! Keeping things simple and natural is a philosophy, and a complete way of life. Bringing back the old ‘tried and true’ ways of making things - before the modern age of chemicals - is something that BCNP strives to achieve. We're all about leading a natural and healthy lifestyle - and part of that means paying attention to what we come into contact with. Our bodies are now seemingly littered with toxic and harmful chemical substances that we come into contact with on a daily basis. There are much better ways of doing things!

BCNP's philosophy is simple - look for ways to make everyday ‘necessities’ of life from scratch: - grinding organically grown wheat berries to make a truly wholesome bread; making natural soaps from the finest “food grade” and ethically harvested vegetable oils while avoiding the use of chemicals or preservatives; growing organic food; and, canning and preserving food without the use of preserving agents. There are so many ways that we can avoid human made chemicals, and homesteading has taught me that, and so much more.

How did I manage to get myself involved in soaping? Many years ago, I was affected by an illness that threatened my life. When this happens, you really tend to look at how you live your life, what foods you consume, and what substances you've come into contact with. It really scares the heck out of you. So I started making changes: while everyone else was busy settling down and raising families, I spent my time in the kitchen; growing my own food; tending gardens for the physical well being (and developing a knowledge about growing things), preserving and canning, making bread from scratch.. I became obsessed with trying to eliminate any possible substances that could harm my well being. That concept naturally lead to soapmaking, since it's a substance we all use in our daily lives, and the added benefits of the aroma-therapeutic indulgence of pure essential oils was something I have always include in my soaps. I've always been fascinated with scents and the memories they can trigger: The other day, I was making some relish on a nice sunny cool autumn day. I stepped outside for a bit and took in some fresh ocean air. When I returned into the house, I was caught by the acidic yet sweet scent of the fresh relish cooking, and I was immediately transposed into my mother's kitchen on a cool autumn day such as the one I was experiencing. Those are memories I cherish :)

The whole point of BCNP's focus is in moving away from harmful substances and going back to the old fashioned way of doing things. That's why you won't find any long, unpronounceable ingredients in any of my soaps, just natural oils and the finest pure essential oils obtained by the CO2 (carbon dioxide) or steam distillation processes. I've taken great care in ensuring that the products I make are free of any unnecessary anthropogenic (man made) substances, including using synthetic fragrance oils.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this section, we'll list the most frequently asked questions about Blue Cabin Natural Products!

Why did you get into this line of work?

A: I decided to get into this kind of work since I was really annoyed at the range of toxic products that are available for everyday personal care. I was also annoyed at the "greenwashing" that accompanied a lot of available products, in particular, the words "ALL NATURAL". Oh, and the price of these products made me realize that being "green" was only for the wealthy. Blue Cabin's focus has been to provide everyone with the ability to access these products without paying a ransom. One of the nicest and biggest compliments that I get about our company is how affordable the products are! and that makes me very happy to hear

One of the other reasons I got into this line of work had to do with keeping local dollars in my community! When you purchase Blue Cabin products, the profits aren't sent to the CEO of a corporate entity, but remain in your local community - those dollars can then be used to put back into the community, send a child to art class, or hockey game. Money spent with Blue Cabin stay here in our local community.

Once you start to sell in larger stores or national chain stores, the only way to increase your profit margins are to cheapen your ingredients list, I see it done all the time (there's a huge difference between Coconut oil (a natural oil) and sodium cocoate (a chemical derivative of coconut oil, but significantly cheaper ingredient).

If you doubt what's in your products, do the research yourself and what you uncover may surprise you!

Are your products safe to use?

A: Believe it or not, this is the most frequently asked question that I get! Let's make a comparison of one popular brand of '100 % Natural' soap:

Sodium Palmate (Surfactant), Aqua/Water/Eau (Solvent), Sodium Palm Kernelate (Surfactant), Glycerin (Humectant), Sorbitol (Humectant), Coconut Acid (Surfactant), Parfum/Fragrance (Fragrance Ingredient), Triethanolamine (pH Adjuster), Glycine Soja Oil/Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil (Emollient), Cocos Nucifera Shell Powder/Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Shell Powder (Abrasive), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Etidronic Acid (Chelating Agent), Tetrasodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Vaccinium Macrocarpon Fruit Extract/Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract (Astringent), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide (Colorant), CI 73360/Red 30 Lake (Colorant).

Now lets compare this to Blue Cabin Soap:

Food grade Olive oil. food grade coconut oil, food grade palm oil, shea butter, castor, pure essential oils

Which one would you put on your skin? ANY oil can be turned into a soap. You really have to look at the ingredients to know what you're putting on your skin. The most popular oil for homemade soap is Crisco… but would you want to put that on your skin?

You keep mentioning Food Grade oils - how does that matter?

Food grade oils are not permitted to have any residual solvents (chemical solvents are used to extract the oils from vegetable sources). At Blue Cabin, we strive to use only pure, clean, unadulterated food grade oils so that we can bring you the absolute best when it comes to personal body care products. Solvent residues are mainstay of cosmetic grade oils, which is why they get labelled "Not for consumption" because they would be poisonous! With the oils that we use, you could ingest our products and not be harmed (although eating soap may not have you feeling the best!)

Do you do fundraisers?

Absolutely. Blue Cabin has, on average spent about 15-20 % of our annual sales on fundraising activities, sponsorships, and special draws! we firmly believe in investing in our local community! in this past year, we've been able to:

  • Support Hope for Wildlife's Annual open house fundraiser:
we donated a 200$ basket of our products to be auctioned with the proceeds going to help support the ongoing work of Hope's activities!

  • Sponsorship of the Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation's Annual Trail Ride:
250$ worth of good were donated to this event!

  • School Fundraisers:
Blue Cabin is there! We regularly donate items for auction at school fundraisers, totalling more than 550$

(formerly the Shambhala Sun Foundation) we've donated items for this auction every year! The Shambhala Sun Foundation’s Eighth Annual Online Auction is where you’ll find 450+ great deals for yourself or to give as gifts while at the same time supporting the Shambhala Sun, Buddhadharma, and LionsRoar.com. As a member of the Shambhala community, Blue Cabin is very supportive of the Foundation and the work it does in making the dharma available to all! go to their auction by clicking here!
